O Cotro Souls' Shrine Peto de ánimas

  • Tomiño, O Cotro, 19th-20th centuries.
  • Coordinates:41.973143, -8.748631
There is a monumental Souls' Shrine crafted in granite located on the wall of a property on the old road to Vilardematos, in O Coutro —right on the border with the parish of Forcadela—. It features a large niche that used to house a wooden altarpiece with the souls. Due to its deterioratin, the original was replaced by a new one made by Antúnez Pousa, depicting the souls among the flames beneath the Crucified Christ. The upper secion is topped by a frieze with a moulded cornice, featuring two large decorative vases flanking a cross with cylindrical arms. To the left of the shrine, embedded in the wall, there is an ashlar stone featuring a skull in relief with the date 1733 engraved above it. On the upper face it has a square opening, suggesting it once served to set the shaft of a cross.
